North Brunswick, NJ – The New Brunswick Matrix jumped out to an early lead and held on for a 4-3 victory over the Angels in a deciding Game 3 on Friday night at North Brunswick Community Park. The win moved the Matrix to the Championship series against the winner of the Monmouth Monarchs and Jersey Aces playoff set.

The Matrix struck first in the bottom of the second when Dave Cardona (Elizabeth, NJ/ The College of New Jersey, NJ) led off with a double to left field. Matt Leviton (South River, NJ/ Utica College, NY) followed with a walk and Austin Chaszar (Bordentown, NJ/ Keystone College, PA) singled on a line drive to right field, loading the bases. After two outs had been recorded, Anthony Perconte (Westfield, NJ/ Rutgers U-Newark, NJ) singled on a ground ball that hugged the foul line, just out of the third baseman’s reach. Leviton and Chaszar scored on the play bringing the Matrix a two run lead before strikeout would end the inning.

In the bottom of the third, the Matrix scored another two runs, but they would prove to be their last of the night. With one out, Cardona walked and, after a second out, Chaszar drove a homerun to left field giving the Matrix a four run advantage.

The Angels fought back in the top of the fifth when Ross Halkias (Kinnelon, NJ/ Rutgers University-Newark, NJ) led off with a homer to center field bringing the score to 4-1.

In the top of the sixth, the Angels tacked on another two runs as they fought to close the gap. Luke Magliaro (Fairfield, NJ/ Morris County College, NJ) drew a walk and scored on Dom Magliaro’s (Fairfield, NJ/ Morris County College, NJ) double to left. Magliaro would advance to third when the Angels loaded the bases and scored when a walk forced in the second run.

Having cut the Matrix lead to a single run, the Angels came close to tying the game in the top of the eighth when Luke Magliaro led off with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, and advanced to third after Dom Magliaro flied out to right field. Unfortunately for the Angels, a ground out would end the threat and the Matrix’s 4-3 lead still holding their 4-3 lead.

With one last chance, the Angels were unable to crack the tough Matrix pitching, closing out the ninth with a quick strikeout, ground out, and fly out, sending the Matrix on to the Championship Round.

In the game, Matrix starter, Conner Dolan (Monmouth Junction, NJ/ Raritan Valley CC, NJ) pitched 5.2 innings and rang up six strikeouts. Kenny Synsyn (Monroe Township, NJ/ Marymount University, VA) closed the game, throwing 3.1 innings while striking out three.

“Synsyn has been like that all year for us,” said Matrix Head Coach, Glenn Fredricks. “He is a guy that we can rely on in any situation. Bringing Kenny in with runners on base… to make the pitches that he did in that spot… it’s not an easy position for anyone to come into. I was really happy with the way he played.”

The New Brunswick Matrix will face the Monarchs-Aces series in the Championship Round at Moody Park in Ewing, NJ on August 5 beginning at 12 PM.

“I think we are all in the same boat and are concerned about pitching depth. Our pitching depth has been a strong point for us this season so hopefully we have enough left in the tank to get through tomorrow’s two games and finish the season off the way we have been all year,” said Fredricks when asked about the championship match up.
