Williamstown, NJ – The Jersey Aces grabbed an early advantage in the second round of the ABCCL Playoffs, blanking the Monmouth Monarchs 4-0 under the lights at Owens Park in Williamstown.

Aces starter Mike Calabrese (Blackwood, NJ/Philadelphia University, PA) worked eight full innings and allowed just two hits, striking out five and surrendering only a single walk. Matt McCourt (Mullica Hills, NJ/Mount Aloyisius College, PA), who also enjoyed an outstanding day at the plate, closed the game with a final shutout inning in the ninth.

The Monarchs had perhaps their best scoring opportunity in the top of the second inning when two walks and a hit batsman loaded the bases with only one out. However the chance for a big inning quickly evaporated when a 6-4-3 double play ended the threat.

The Aces broke into the scoring column in the home half of the third. Kyle Walker (Piscataway, NJ/Rutgers University-New Brunswick, NJ) hammered a leadoff single and Giovanni Torres (Harrisburg, PA/Lackawanna College, PA) followed suit with a second single to center. A walk to Chris Roan (Woodbury, NJ/Rowan College at Gloucester County, NJ) loaded the bases. After a strikeout, a wild pitch and single by John Gavura (Marlton, NJ/Felician University, NJ) produced a 2-0 Aces lead.

In the top of the fifth the Monarchs Tyler Coppo (Fitzwilliam, NH/University of Hartford, CT) lined a two-out double to left but was stranded there when Calabrese induced a harmless fly to center to end the threat.

In the home half of the inning the Aces added to their lead when Walker drew a base on balls and McCourt, who had two hits on the night, slammed a 1-1 pitch over the center field wall. His two-run dinger upped the Aces lead to 4-0, which would prove to be more than enough for Calebrese and his mates.

“Matt McCourt has played exceptionally well the entire season,” said Lou Camilli, Aces Head Coach. “He’s a versatile player who has impacted our playoff games with his ability to hit the long ball and drive in runs.”

The Monarchs were only able to mount one more scoring threat when Isaiah Hall (Burlington Township, NJ/Lincoln University, PA) tripled with one out in the eighth, but a strike out and line out quickly ended the inning and assured the Aces win.

According to Camilli, “I thought we played really well tonight especially our pitching and defense. There were a lot of fly balls and line drives that we got to that may otherwise have changed the outcome. Our winning streak at the end of the regular season and success in the playoffs has been a complete team effort.”

With a chance to close out the series and move on to the championship round, the Aces travel to Holmdel for a rematch with the Monarchs on Wednesday, August 2 at St. John Vianney High School. First pitch is scheduled for 5:15 PM.
