Holmdel, NJ – In game one of Sunday’s doubleheader, the Ocean Giants fought back after trailing the North River Superstars by six runs in the second inning, but the comeback fell just short, ending in a 9-8 defeat.  In game two, the tide turned and the Giants jumped out to an early lead to take a 14-4 victory at St. John Vianney High School.

In the opener, the Superstars made a strong statement with four runs in the top of the first inning.  After three walks in a row to lead off the first, Patrick Faughnan (Union, NJ /Felician University, NJ) got the ball rolling for the Superstars with a fly ball to left field that was misplayed, the error scoring Julio Acosta (Elizabeth, NJ/ Bergen County Community College, NJ). The bats remained hot for the Superstars as Leurys Diaz (Santo Domingo, DR/Freeport, NY/ ASA College, FL), Nathaniel Cruz (Staten Island, NY/ Kingsborough Community College, NY), and Sandy Morrabel (Bronx, NY/ Monroe College, NY) LL roped RBI sINGLES giving the Superstars a 4-0 lead.

Carlos Benoit (NYC / Bergenfield, NJ/ Lackawanna College, PA) was strong on the mound for the Superstars and only allowed three hits in five innings with seven strikeouts. With a powerful arm and solid defense, the Giants would not see any runs until the fourth inning.

Austin Arndt (Lebanon, NJ/ Kean University, NJ) roped a double, scoring Brendan Munoz (Millstone, NJ/ Ursinus College, NY) and Vince Montone (Oak Ridge, NJ/ Misericordia University,PA), giving the Superstars a six run advantage.

The Giants got on the board in the bottom of the fourth with three runs. After Rob DeSanti (Barnegat, NJ/ Caldwell College, NJ) scored on a passed ball, Stephen Carbonara (Manalapan, NJ/ Alvernia University, PA) singled to left field scoring Evan Pietronico (Matawan, NJ/ NJ Institute of Technology, NJ). Michael Chiusano (Middletown, NJ/ Brookdale CC, NJ) stroked another double, driving in Dan Tricarico (Piscataway, NJ/ Rutgers University-Newark, NJ) and by the end of the inning the Giants had closed the gap, 6-3.

A shortstop error in the bottom of the sixth would give the Giants another run and with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, James Donlon (Brick, NJ/ FDU Metro) slammed a 3-run homerun to right field scoring Mason Marino (Brooklyn, NY/ Caldwell College, NJ) and Mike Cirilli (Ramsey, NJ/ Alvernia University, PA) to give the Giants their first lead of the game, 7-6.

The Superstars would go on to tie the game at seven after Travis Brunson (Westfield, NJ/Union County College, NY) reached home on a squeeze bunt to the pitcher’s mound. Vince Montone (Oak Ridge, NJ/ Misericordia University, PA) gave the Superstars their last run of the night before a strikeout would end the top of the eighth with the Superstars back in front, 9-7.

The Giants staged a comeback late in the eighth when Quinn Krais (Maplewood, NJ/ Wheaton College, MA) roped an RBI single, but it would be the last run of game for the Giants, who fell just short in the final 9-8 score.

Determined to take home a victory in game two, the Giants jumped out to an early lead with six runs in the first inning and five in the second.

Cirilli drew a walk to lead off the first and later scored on Bates’ triple. Dolan, Freddy Yahn (Middletown, NJ/ Eastern University, PA) roped RBI singles extending the lead by three. Andrew La Rosa (Brick, NJ/ Neumann University, PA) homered to right field scoring Carbonara and Yahn to up the lead to 6-0.

The Giants remained strong at bat in the second as Dolan blasted a grand slam giving the Giants a comfortable 10-0 lead. Carbonara added another run before the final out of the inning was recorded.

The odds were not looking good for the Superstars, but they were not going down without fight. In the home second Cruz came home after a Munoz’s ground ball to shortstop. Diaz also scored on another fielder’s choice to narrow their deficit to 10-2.

In the third inning RBI singles from Cirilli and Pietronico added to the Giant’s already commanding lead, 13-2.

After doubling on a ground ball and scoring on Tim Heard’s (Lebanon, NJ/ Moravian College, PA) single line, Rob Greco (Franklin Lakes, NJ/ Presbyterian College, SC) added another run for the Superstars in the bottom of the third.

The Giants’ advantage remained at 13-3 until the bottom of the fifth when Acosta scored the Superstars’ last run of game two.

In the last inning, the Giants sealed the deal with Dolan’s RBI single finalizing the score, 14-4.

Hopeful to return to their winning ways for the next game, the Superstars will face the Monmouth Monarchs at Bergen Community College on July 11, at 5:45 PM while the Ocean Giants face off against the Clemente Baseball Club at the same time and day at St. John Vianney.
