Holmdel, NJMason Marino (Brooklyn, NY/Caldwell College, NJ) homered twice and drove in four in the first game as the Ocean Giants captured Game 1 of a doubleheader. The Monmouth Monarchs bounced back to grab the win in Game 2 at St. John Vianney High School on Sunday afternoon.

Mason Marino homered twice and drove in four runs for the Giants in game one of Sunday’s doubleheader.

Dan Tricarico (Piscataway, NJ/Rutgers University-Newark, NJ) singled with one out in the top of the second of game one when Marino stepped up to the plate and launched his first homer of the game to right field. The ball was in the glove of Monarchs’ right fielder Tyler Coppo (Fitzwilliam, NH/University of Hartford, CT), but fell out as he collided with the fence and dropped over to give the Giants a 2-0 lead.

The Giants added three more in the top of the third, extending their lead to 5-0. Mike Cirilli (Ramsey, NJ/Alvernia University, PA) walked with one out and James Donlon (Brick, NJ/Fairleigh Dickinson University-Metro, NJ) reached on a fielding error. A balk advanced both runners to second and third before they both scored on a single by Justin Bates (Brick, NJ/Montclair State University, NJ). Later in the inning Bates also scored on a single by Marino. In the top of the fourth, Quinn Krais (Mapelwood, NJ/Wheaton College, MA) walked, stole second and scored on a single to right by Cirilli.

The Monarchs got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Isaiah Lewis (Willingboro, NJ/Erskine College, SC) homered to center. They added another run in the bottom of the fifth as Robert Carmody (Canton, MA/University of Hartford, CT) walked, advanced to third on a single by Cid Porter (Lincroft, NJ/Catholic University) and scored on a passed ball, making it a 6-2 game.

The Giants got those runs back in the top of the sixth. Back-to-back singles by Andrew LaRosa (Brick, NJ/Neumann University, PA) and Krais put runners on first and second with nobody out. Cirilli drove in his second run of the game with a single, scoring LaRosa from second and sending Krais to third. From there he scored on a wild pitch. Marino belted his second opposite field home run of the game in the top of the seventh as he lined a ball over the fence down the right field line, giving the Giants an unsurmountable 9-2 lead. They went on to win by that score.

The Giants stuck early once again in Game Two, with two runs coming in the bottom of the first and second innings. In the first, Rob DeSanti (Barnegat, NJ/Caldwell College, NJ) led off with a single, advanced to second on a walk and went to third on a 4-6 fielder’s choice that enabled Tricarico to reach safely. A walk advanced him to second, setting up runners on second and third for Stephen Carbonara (Manalapan, NJ/Alvernia University, PA), who drove in both runners with a single.

In the bottom of the second, Freddy Yahn (Middletown, NJ/Eastern University, PA) was hit by a pitch and eliminated on a 6-4 fielder’s choice that allowed Krais to reach safely. He stole second and scored on a single by DeSanti, who advanced to second on a fielding error and scored on a throwing error by the pitcher.

The Monarchs’ bats woke up and a “here come the Monarchs” chant started in the third base dugout in what would prove to be a five run top of the third, all of the scores coming with two out. A.J. Arias (East Brunswick, NJ/Mercer County CC, NJ) singled and advanced to second as Porter was hit by a pitch. Arias scored on a single by David Angstadt (Glen Allen, VA/The College of William & Mary, VA), who scored along with Porter on a double by Isaiah Hall (Burlington Township, NJ/Lincoln University, PA).  At that point Joseph Rotelli (Morganville, NJ/Dominican College, NY) sent a ball over the left field fence for a two-run home run to give the Monarchs a 5-4 lead.

The Giants tied the game at five in the bottom of the third as Tricarico singled, went first to third on a double by Michael Pfenninger (Flemington, NJ/Manhattan College, NY) and scored on a 6-3-5 double play.

The Monarchs regained the lead in the top of the fourth as Anthony Santoro (Manalapan, NJ/Rutgers University-New Brunswick, NJ) singled with one out and took second on a throwing error. He advanced to third on a fielding error and scored on a bases loaded walk to Porter.

Both teams were kept off the scoreboard until the bottom of the seventh. The Giants’ Krais led off with a single and took second on an errant pickoff attempt. He advanced to third on a single and scored on a 6-4 fielder’s choice by LaRosa, tying the game at six and forcing extra innings.

The Monarchs wasted no time in settling matters as they blew the game open with six runs in the top of the eighth. Rotelli led off with a walk and advanced to second on a single by Frank Bilancio (Chesterfield, NJ/Saint Edward’s University, TX). Three straight walks to Lewis, Coppo and Santoro forced in two runs. Carmody singled to drive in Lewis, and Arias grounded back to the pitcher who threw the ball down the right field line, allowing three more runs to score and giving the Monarchs a 12-6 lead.

The Giants scored two in the bottom of the eighth on doubles by Tricarico, Pfenninger and Yahn but it was not enough, and Monarchs claimed the game by a 12-8 final score.

Both teams will resume play on Sunday, July 9 after the 17th Annual ABCCL Capt. Ryan K. Iannelli All-Star Showcase & Game, which will take place at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood on Wednesday, July 5. Gates will open at 4 p.m. with team workouts beginning at 4:30 p.m. and first pitch slated for 6:15 p.m.
