Parsippany, NJ – On Wednesday night at Smith Field, the North River Superstars and NJ Angels battled it out for seven innings before the Angels pulled out a well-earned win.

The Angels made an early statement in the top of the second inning when Kyle Oliver (Bernardsville, NJ/ Sacred Heart University, NJ) singled on ground ball to left field. The Angels added two more base runners before Luke Magilaro (Fairfield, NJ/Morris County College, NJ) drove a line drive to right field. A critical fielding error on the play resulted in a 3-0 Angels lead.

With starting pitcher, Mike Walley (Yardley, PA/ The College of New Jersey, NJ) throwing strikes and his team playing solid defense, the Angels made quick work of the Superstars in the early going. Angels Coach Fred DeFrance was pleasantly surprised with Walley’s pitching saying, “I think he was great. He was getting some questionable calls behind the plate that extended his pitch count, otherwise he would have gone another two innings, but he’s very good and deserves to be in TCNJ’s rotation next year.”

The Angels would go on to add another run in the bottom of the third when Patrick Davis (Dickinson College, PA/ New Providence, NJ) singled to right field, scoring Julius Puryear (Bergen Community College, NJ/ West Orange, NJ).

Continuing to fight, the Superstars battled back in the top of the fourth when Vince Montone (Misericordia University, PA/ Oak Ridge, NJ) walked and was followed by a homerun to center field by Patrick Faughnan (Felician University, NJ/ Union, NJ).

Walley refused to allow any more hits and ended the Superstars’ threat with a fly out and two strikeouts.

The Angels extended their lead in the bottom of the fourth when Brian Peguero (Jersey City, NJ/ Bergen County College, NJ) slammed a homerun to left field, giving the Angels a three run advantage.

Both offenses remained quiet until a pitching change for the Angels backfired and the Superstars’ Julio Acosta (Bergen County Community College, NJ) narrowed the gap, doubling to right field,  bringing home Faughnan. Unfortunately for the Superstars this would be their last score of the night.

Ross Halkias (Rutgers- Newark University, NJ/ Kinnelon, NJ) kept the ball rolling for the Angels in the bottom of the sixth with a line drive single to center field. The bats remained hot for the Angels as Magilaro roped a double to center driving in both Halkias and Alex Cappitelli (North Caldwell, NJ /Wesleyan College, CT), further extending the Angels’ lead and the 8-3 final score.

Hoping to use their victory as motivation to continue their winning streak, the NJ Angels will have a rematch with the North River Superstars on June 15, at 5:45 PM at Holmdel HS.
