Holmdel, NJ – Clemente Baseball Club and the Monmouth Monarchs braved mid-90s heat and split a high-scoring doubleheader at St. John Vianney High School on Sunday. Clemente won the first game, 9-7 and the Monarchs took Game 2, a seven inning affair, 7-4.

“It’s always good to come out and win the first one to give yourself a chance to sweep,” Clemente Head Coach Dom Capuano said. “We jumped on them early and we capitalized and did what we needed to do to hang on.  A lot of our guys are younger and these are the at-bats they need to get comfortable in the box and it’s coming along.  We’ve won two of three and hopefully, we’re on the right track.”

Clemente scored the first five runs in game one and kept the Monarchs off the scoreboard until the sixth inning. Dan Borup (Plainsboro, NJ/The College of New Jersey) led off the top of the first inning with a walk and scored on a throwing error. They scored four more runs in the second inning, helped by Monarchs defensive lapses. Hayden Reyes (Cranbury, NJ/Montclair State University, NJ) walked, stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on an error. Brandon Radd (Edison, NJ/Drew University, NJ) reached on another error and Jeremy Gerrigan (Marlboro, NJ/St. Lawrence University, NY) walked.  Both scored on passed balls. Bourp reached on an error and scored on a sac fly to center field.

The Monarchs finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Frank Bilancio (Chesterfield, NJ/Saint Edward’s University, TX) homered to left field.

Clemente scored three in the top of the seventh, extending their lead to 8-1. Moses Vigo (Ewing, NJ/Delaware State University. DE) drove in Gerrigan with a single and Kellen Hardy (Branchburg, NJ/Mercer County College, NJ) drove in Vigo and Borup with a double.

The Monarchs made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh, putting up a five spot and cutting the Clemente advantage to 8-6.  Isaiah Hall (Burlington Township, NJ/Lincoln University, PA) led off with a single, stole second and third and scored on a single by Nicholas Camilleri (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ/Southern New Hampshire University, NH). Tyler Coppo (Fitzwilliam, NH/University of Hartford, CT) walked and scored on an error. The big blow came off the bat of Joseph Rotelli (Morganville, NJ/Dominican College, NY), who lifted a three-run home run to left-center field.

Both teams added a run in the eighth.  For Clemente, Reyes walked and scored on outfield error after a stolen base had enabled him to advance to third. While for the Monarchs, David Angstdat (Glen Allen, VA/The College of William & Mary, VA)  homered in the bottom of the eighth. But it was not enough to overcome what would be a final two-run deficit, bringing the game to a 9-7 end.

The Monarchs struck quickly in Game 2, as Luke Hoyl (Dallas, TX/Saint Edward’s University, TX) led off the game with a walk and stole second. A single by Hall advanced Hoyl to third, bringing up Rotelli, whose RBI single to left scored Hoyl with Hall moving to third. With two outs a Coppo ground ball was mishandled for an error as Hall crossed the plate.

The Monarchs scored their third run of the game when Hall stroked another single and scored on an error.  In the fourth, Coppo singled to left and A.J. Arias (East Brunswick, NJ/Mercer County Community College, NJ) drew a walk.  Following a double steal, Cole Hardy (Middletown, NJ/Brookdale Community College, NJ) singled to center, scoring Coppo and advancing Arias to third. A sac fly by Hoyl produced the inning’s third run and pushed the Monarchs lead to 5-0.

Clemente finally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth.  Steve Santigate (Marlboro, NJ/Kean University, NJ) walked, moved to second base on a single and scored on a throwing error. Joe Piscopo (Matawan, NJ/Centenary College, NJ) then drove in two runs with a single, cutting the deficit to 5-3.

Clemente scored again in the fifth as Vigo singled, advanced to second on an error and scored on a single by Kellen Hardy, making it a one run game.

But the Monarchs added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh as Bilancio and Anthony Santoro (Manalapan, NJ/Rutgers University, NJ) singled.  Santoro was pinch-run for by Alexis Calderon (Bethlehem, PA/Manhattan College, NY). A single by Coppo scored Bilancio and a pitch that hit Camilleri loaded the base. An RBI walk to Arias produced the final Monarchs run, cementing the game’s 7-4 conclusion.

“In Game 1 we walked a lot of guys and made some mistakes in the field, but we started swinging a little bit better toward the end.  Fortunately, we kept that momentum going into the second game,” Monarchs assistant coach Matt Meleo said. “Our pitchers pounded the strike zone and the batters got some clutch hits… and that’s the name of the game.”

Clemente (3-5) will next take on the Freehold Clippers in a seven inning doubleheader beginning at 5:15 p.m. at Sondek Park in Monmouth Junction, while the Monarchs (4-5) also have a doubleheader featuring two seven-inning affairs against the New Brunswick Matrix at North Brunswick Community Park, also at 5:15 p.m.  Both doubleheaders will take place on Tuesday, June 13.
