Freehold Township, NJ – With the game tied at 5 going into the bottom of the eighth inning, the Freehold Clippers scored three runs to pull away to an 8-5 victory over the Ocean Giants at Michael J Tighe Park in Freehold Township on Thursday night.

In the decisive eighth inning, Dylan Evans (Brick, NJ/LaSalle University, PA) led off with a walk and Austin Lindsay (Allentown, NJ/The College of New Jersey) was hit by a pitch. Jacob Simon (Hightstown, NJ/The College of New Jersey) grounded into a fielder’s choice. The throw to first base to attempt a double play was wide, allowing Evan to score the go-ahead run from second. Eric Small (Downingtown, PA/Chestnut Hill College, PA) was also hit by a pitch and came around to score with Simon on a two-run single by Steve Edelstein (Staten Island, NY/Stockton University, NJ).

“Jacob gave us a good at bat in the eighth and when you put the ball in play, good things happen,” Clippers Head Coach Gerry Patrizio said. “Steve gave us a big two-run single. It was a true team effort today. We were down early and came back. The Giants did a good job coming back, that’s what baseball is all about, but we were able to shut it down.”

Clippers starter Daniel Murphy (South Amboy, NJ/Rutgers University-Newark, NJ) gave up two runs in the first inning, but settled down from there, allowing just  two runs on three hits with three strikeouts in four innings.

“I was just trying to stay relaxed. This was my first start in a while so it took me some time to settle in and get used to it again,” Murphy said. “As soon as I was able to, I felt fine.”

“He’s typically not a starter but he’s trying to get into that role in school so we threw him out there,” Patrizio said. “He did a great job and you can’t ask for much more than that.”

For the Giants, Michael Pfenninger (Flemmington, NJ/Manhattan College, NY) walked and James Donlon (Brick, NJ/Fairleigh Dickinson University-Metro, NJ) singled in the first inning. Both scored on a single by Justin Bates (Brick, NJ/Montclair State University, NJ).

Freehold’s Dan Iannaconne (Parlin, NJ/Rutgers-Newark, NJ) singled and scored in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly by Lindsay. In the second, Small singled, stole second and scored on a single by John Moschella (Little Silver, NJ/Tufts University, MA). Edelstein also scored in the inning after reaching on a fielder’s choice.

The Clippers added two more runs in the third to take a 5-3 lead. Alec Craig (Hammonton, NJ/Chestnut Hill College, PA) led off with a single and scored on a single by Lindsay. Simon reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on another Edelstein single to right.

Ocean was kept off the board until the fifth inning, when Pfenninger doubled off of new Freehold pitcher Peter Nielson (Freehold, NJ/Mercer County Community College, NJ) and Freddy Yahn (Middletown, NJ/Eastern University, PA) was hit by a pitch. Both scored on a single by Bates. Dan Tricarico (Piscataway, NJ/Rutgers University-Newark, NJ) also singled and scored for Ocean in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Dolan to tie the game at 5-5  before the Clippers broke the deadlock for good in the following inning.

Both teams will play Sunday doubleheaders on June 11. The Clippers will visit the New Brunswick Matrix at 10 a.m. at North Brunswick Community Park while the Giants will take on the North River Superstars at 11 a.m. at Holmdel High School.
