Williamstown, NJ – A five-run rally beginning in the bottom of the eighth inning was not enough for the Jersey Aces against Clemente Baseball Club on Thursday night, as Clemente held on for a 6-5 victory in ten innings at Owens Park.

Clemente (2-4) was up 5-0 in the bottom of the eighth inning before the Aces mounted a stellar comeback. A solo home run in the inning and then four runs in the ninth forced the game to go to extras, where a base knock by Moses Vigo (Ewing, NJ / Delaware State University, DE) drove in the deciding run as Clemente hung on by a thread in the bottom half of the inning.

Head Coach Dom Capuano was holding his breath in the final innings of play. “Yeah it was a little scary, but we did what we had to do. A win is a win and we needed that going into Sunday’s games,” he said.

Held scoreless until the bottom of the eighth, the Aces’ Dante Camilli (Upper Deerfied, NJ / Salisbury University, MD) rocketed a solo home run to left-center field to cut the deficit to 5-1.

The bottom of the ninth was all Aces, knocking base hits early and often to get around the base paths.

Three straight singles to start off the frame led to a 2-RBI single from Wyatt Thomas (Little Egg Harbor, NJ / Camden County College, NJ), to bring the Aces to within 5-3. A sacrifice fly reduced the gap to one run, and then Thomas scored on a Clemente error to tie things up, as the Aces dugout erupted in a frenzy.

After Clemente regained the lead, the Aces were again threatening with a runner on second with only one out. Clemente’s Joe Piscopo (Matawan, NJ / Centenary College, NJ) had an amazing outfield assist, throwing out the Aces base runner looking to go from second to home on a single, and the tag was applied just in time to rule the runner out. A fly out on the following pitch preserved the Clemente win.

“It was good to see the hitting come together today,” Capuano added. “Sometimes at the beginning of the season hitting isn’t quite there, but today, we did well. You give up a five-run lead but then to come back with back-to-back doubles to take the lead was nice.”

Clemente was able to jump out to the early lead, grabbing the game’s first two runs in the top of second inning. Piscopo would score on an RBI double from Hayden Reyes (Cranbury, NJ / Montclair State University, NJ) to extend the lead to 3-0 the following inning. Clemente also tallied runs in the fifth and sixth innings to jump out to the 5-0 lead.

Strong starting pitching helped put Clemente in a good position early, as Max Guidice (Hillsborough, NJ / The College of New Jersey) and Brandon Radd (Edison, NJ / Drew University, NJ) combined for six scoreless innings and seven strikeouts.

Clemente will next face the Monmouth Monarchs in a doubleheader on Sunday, June 11 at St. John Vianney High School in Holmdel, with the first game slated for a 10 a.m. start. The Aces will also play a doubleheader versus the New Jersey Angels on Sunday at Smith Field in Parsippany. First pitch is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
