Howell, NJ – At all levels of collegiate baseball, most seasons end after the regular season, or even conference tournaments.  But for some select teams, the “second season” just begins after the regular one ends. Select teams at the Division I, II and III levels have an opportunity to play in NCAA National Baseball Championships, and ABCCL players took part in the tournaments at each level.

Division I

At 27-30 and champions of the Big South Conference, Radford University (VA) earned a No. 4 seed in the Louisville Regional of the bracket.  Sophomore left-handed pitcher Andrew Nardi (2016 ABCCL GIANTS / Morganville, NJ) pitched in the Highlanders’ first game, an 11-6 loss to No. 1 seed Louisville in Louisville, KY.  Nardi recorded the final five outs in order in relief for the Highlanders, tossing 1.2 innings and striking out three batters.  Radford would go on to lose their second and final game to Xavier 3-1.

The Colonial Athletic Association Champions, University of Delaware Blue Hens, at 34-21, earned a No. 4 seed in the Lubbock Regional of the bracket.  Redshirt sophomore outfielder Mike Krusinski (2016 ABCCL Starz / Medford, NJ) was a part of the team that took home its first ever CAA title. He batted .333 in five games, and recorded three RBIs.  The Blue Hens lost both games in the regional, to Texas Tech and Arizona, respectively.

Division II

The West Chester University (PA) Rams took home the Division II National Championship with a 5-2 victory over UC San Diego on June 4 in Grand Prairie, TX.  It is the team’s second title in six years.  A part of that winning team included ABCCL alumnus Joey Coyle (2016 ABCCL Starz / Wilmington, DE). The outfielder batted .321 in 36 games with 14 starts, recording 17 hits, one home run, and four RBIs during the regular season. He appeared as a pinch runner in the championship game win.

Also appearing in the Division II Tournament was the St. Thomas Aquinas (NY) College Spartans, who went 2-2 in the tournament, winning their first two games but losing the next two. Deven Del Priore (2016 ABCCL Giants / Point Pleasant, NJ) appeared as a pinch hitter in two of the team’s tournament games. Over the regular season, the senior catcher logged 38 games, sporting a .241 average to go with one home run and nine RBIs.

Division III

At 27-15, Wheaton College (MA) earned a spot in the Division III National Baseball Championship in Appleton, WI.  The Lyons roster includes several ABCCL players, including current player, Quinn Krais (2017 ABCCL Giants / Maplewood, NJ).  League alumnus Jimmy Gowen (2016 ABCCL Monarchs / Brielle, NJ) allowed one unearned run and struck out two in one inning of relief in the team’s first tournament game, a 4-2 loss to eventual tournament champions California-Lutheran.  Two-time ABCCL All-Star, Joey Santigate (2015/2016 ABCCL Monarchs / Staten Island, NY), and a team mainstay throughout the year, started at catcher but could not prevent Wheaton’s final game loss, a 3-2 thriller to the University of Massachusetts at Boston.

The ABCCL wants to extend its congratulations to all of its current and former players who contributed to their colleges’ and universities’ baseball programs during the past year. Win, lose or draw you are all champions to us.
