Point Pleasant Beach, NJ / August 2, 2016 – In a do or die situation on Tuesday night, the DiMaggio Bombers were able to outscore the Ocean Giants 4-3 to advance to the next round of the ABCCL playoffs.
The Bombers got on the board almost immediately in the top of the first inning when Brian Gillen (South Plainfield, NJ/Arcadia University, PA) tripled to center field on the first pitch of the game. Frank McHugh (Pittstown, NJ/County College of Morris, NJ) followed in similar fashion by driving the second pitch of the game to the right field wall for a double to give his team an early 1-0 lead.
The Bombers went on to post two more runs in the top of the fifth when Andrew Atkins (Rumson, NJ/Skidmore College, NY) lined a one out single into center field. Gillen followed with a walk and the pair was then driven in by Ryan McNaughton (River Vale, NJ/Ramapo College, NJ) when he looped a single into center field to make it 3-0 at the end of the top of the fifth.
The Bombers put up one last run in the top of the seventh when Atkins reached base on a walk. Gillen was due up next and singled to center field to put runners on first and second with one out. McHugh then drew a walk to load the bases which allowed McNaughton to drive in Atkins from third to give the Bombers a comfortable 4-0 lead.
However, the Giants were not going to end their season without a fight. Conor Gammond (Spring Lake, NJ/Monmouth University, NJ) started off the bottom of the ninth with a double to centerfield. Following Gammond was Travis Cloney (Wall, NJ/College of Holy Cross, MA) who reached on an infield single to put runners on the corners. After a strikeout, Nick Panissidi (Toms River, NJ/Neumann University, PA) lined a single into left field to drive in Gammond bringing the score to 4-1. Deven Delpriore (Point Pleasant, NJ/St. Thomas Aquinas College, NY) was next and lined a single into right field driving in Cloney to make it a 4-2 ballgame. Ryan Scholey (Hamilton, NJ/University of the Sciences, PA) stepped into the box and delivered a double to deep right field driving in Panissidi to make it 4-3 with men on second and third with one out. Nick Matteo (Brick, NJ/DeSales University, PA) stepped up to the plate and drew a walk to load the bases for Matt D’Angelo (Sea Girt, NJ/St. Peters University, NJ). D’Angelo got a hold of the first pitch he saw hitting a high fly ball into right field to Bombers’ JJ Ruehl (Hillsdale, NJ/County College of Morris, NJ). Ruehl fielded the fly ball for out number two and fired a strike to home plate on a line to nail Delpriore who tagged up from third to end both the game and the Ocean Giants season. It was a spectacular play to end a fully fought out game by both teams.
Bombers starting pitcher Dan Corvo (River Vale, NJ/Rowan University, NJ) was a huge factor to his team recording the victory on Tuesday night as he pitched eight full innings holding the Giants to one run on four hits and three walks. Corvo also struck out eight in his time on the mound. After the game when asked what his approach was on the mound Corvo stated “I knew it was a must win for our team so I knew I had to go out there and shove [perform at my best]. So that’s exactly what I did.” The Bombers will move on to the next round of the ABCCL playoffs with full hopes of taking this season as far they can!
